Egg Tree and Mod Podge Egg Tutorial

I finally finished all of the Mod Podge eggs that I wanted to make for my egg tree (pictures are at the end of this post). I thought after making so many of them and struggling at the beginning figuring out a way to do them that actually worked, I would add a little tutorial. To make these I used:
Plastic easter eggs
scrapbook paper
Mod Podge
Ribbon
1. Start by dabbing some glue around the middle of the egg to glue it together.
2. Cut your scrapbook paper into small squares. I found that small squares (less than an inch in size) worked the best. I used sheets of paper that were 5x7 and cut up about 2/3 of the sheet.
3. Start by brushing some of the Mod Podge on the egg and then sticking the squares down. You will need to make a small fold in one side of the square to get it to lay nicely on the egg.
4. Continue adding more squares, remembering to make a fold or dart in each square (it doesn't matter on what side the fold is). It is best to work around the middle of the egg first and leave the top and bottom until last.
5. It will look like this: ( I think it kind of looks like paper mache)
6. Now work toward the top and when you get to the last piece instead of folding it cut a small slit in it like this and....
fold it over as you glue it down over the very top point of the egg. Repeat if necessary to cover the whole point.
7. Repeat the same process toward the bottom of the egg. It doesn't always work out like this but if you can end up with just one small spot to cover then you can just put a single square over it like this...

8. Then cover the whole thing with a coat of Mod Podge and let it dry. Once dry attach a ribbon hanger. I hot glued mine to the top of the egg. To make my tree I went out into my back alley and found a dead tree and borrowed a branch from it. I spray painted it white as well as a vase to put it in. I put a piece of Styrofoam in the vase and hot glued the branch into it. I glued green Spanish moss over the top of the Styrofoam. Then I hung my eggs on it.

I intend to use the tree for other holidays mostly because it is too big and awkward to store in our basement. It may become a permanent part of our kitchen island which is where is it displaying these cool eggs right now. I have always wanted one of these. I am really happy with how it turned out.

  1. That is way cool! I made one years ago for my Pre-K classroom, the branch tree, just a lot smaller and without the neat eggs you made.I wish I had had your idea, it would have been super cute!
I love the idea of using it for every holiday too!
