Dear Walmart

This could be a regular feature

Dear Walmart
If you are going to advertise how you are helping the environment by going green with your reusable shopping bags the least you could do is come up with some way to hold said shopping bags at your check out stations so that the cashiers could put the groceries in them a little faster and not hold up the 8 people waiting behind you. Every time I get to the check out the cashiers fumble with my stack of reusable bags as if they were a pile of dirty underwear that they are not sure how to handle. Some of them let me know how much they dislike them and others let me know how hard they are to pack. And every time I am hold up the line. I am trying to help the environment. I should be getting a 1cent discount or something, not grief at the check out. I am just going to start holding open my own bags from now on. Going green; it's the wave of the future Walmart. A new little hookydoo for the reusable bags to speed up the check out process; that's all I am asking.
And while I am writing, why is it that you always seem to have your slowest employees stationed at your speed/fast lane check outs?
Sincerely,
The shopper who was grateful for the $3.33 frozen pizzas but not the long lines once again.

  1. You should get a petition started. This is truly ridiculous. This is my complaint as well.

  2. I agree! My local super market has hooks on the circular bag thingymado, and a tab in the bag. The handle slides over the bag bars, the tab over the hook, and they fill it. The cashiers are all well versed in how to use it, and do so quickly.

I do agree, though, that shoppers would probably be more easily persuaded to reuse bags if they got some sort of a discount. The store is ultimately saving money on the use of less bags, and making money from the sale of the reusable bags.

  3. Same problem here in Canada at the store I work at. I'm not a cashier but feel so bad for them they are trying to work with this new system with out the right tools. It just ends up creating long lines. We do however get to earn points towards free product for using each bag if we pay with a store debit or credit card.
    PS love your blog

  4. I loathe WalMart. I won't go there unless it is absolutely necessary. I've been there twice in the past week. :/ Not happy.

  5. I went in one day with some reuseable bags and because they were not Wal-Mart bags, the cashier wouldn't bag my stuff! She told me I had to do it myself. So, I did. The next time I went in with my bags, I was prepared to bag my own again, but this time the cashier did. I'm sorry, but I am NOT going to buy bags from each of the stores I visit! I've gotten plenty of free bags, so I am not going to buy more!

  6. Now that is a scandal if ever I heard one, not bag your groceries because your bag is not from that store. Good grief. Probably the same lady that told me how much she hated reuseable bags. I make my own. So what would i have to do? What a contraversy.

  8. I have found that the only places that really have supportive checkers for the reusable bags are places that are green through and through. Trader Joes has a weekly lottery to enter if you use those bags and it's for $25 GC. IKEA has no other bags to use. Same with Costco. And, Whole Foods (not that I can afford that store) pioneered these bags. My grocery store gives store points for reusable bags, but I have to tell the checker to scan for the points every time. They are getting better about not looking at the bags like underwear. Perfect description by the way.

  9. Oh, I hear you! This is SO frustrating! Target is so nice about it, and they give 5 cents off for each bag you bring in! Yeah Target! Our grocery stores do the same thing and I love it and they don't care, neither does Target, where the bags come from!

  10. You are supposed to get a 5 cent discount for EACH reusable bag you have. At least that is how it is here in UT AND when I lived and worked for a grocery store in WA state 8 YEARS ago...You might have to ask about the discount as the seem to treat it like it is a "secret"

    I'm just sayin!!

  11. Wait, are you saying at Wal Mart you are supposed to get a discount??? Oh this is really a scandal. I have been using reuseable bags for over a year now and haven't recieved a cent in discounts.
